Waste not
Researchers at Yale University have assessed the “criticality” of all the metallic elements, indicating which might become more difficult to source in the coming years. Factors contributing to criticality include high geopolitical concentration of primary production (over 90% of the rare Earth metals comes from China); lack of available substitutes and political instability (a major source of tantalum is the war-ravaged Democratic Republic of the Congo). Another report has highlighted sewage as a source for extracting and recycling metals.

Sensor technology developments
Sensor technology has developed somewhat since the days of taking canaries down coal mines to detect toxic gases. However it seems that we can still learn from the natural world.
In 373 BC, historians recorded that animals, including rats, snakes and weasels, deserted the Greek city of Helice in droves just days before an earthquake devastated the place. A recent study has found significant changes in animal behaviour immediately before an earthquake, possibly linked with airborne positive ions created by the electric charges generated by stressed subterranean rocks grinding together.
As Albert Einstein said: Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.
