Device decline

Worldwide shipments of devices (PCs, tablets and mobile phones) will total 2.2 billion units in 2019, a decline of 3.3% year over year, according to Gartner, Inc.. The mobile phone market is set to record the worst performance.

A good buy.

Video recordings of the Apollo 11 Moon landing sold last month for $1.82 million. The tapes were part of a purchase made 43 years ago by a NASA intern for $217.77 from a government surplus auction.

Michael Pepper wins Isaac Newton Medal and Prize

The condensed-matter physicist Michael Pepper has won the Isaac Newton Medal and Prize “for the creation of the field of semiconductor nanoelectronics and discovery of new quantum phenomena”. Presented by the Institute of Physics, the international award is given annually for “world-leading contributions to physics”.

To date the hunt for dark matter has been thorough, expensive and unsuccessful. A new paper proposes constraints on the nature of dark matter based on the absence of unexplained gunshot-like impact wounds around the world. Dangerous work astronomy.

The science of history

I frequently delve into the history of science but what about the science of history? If the thought processes of current world leaders occasionally appear unclear, then how do we correctly interpret the thinking and actions of Charlemagne, Theodoric, Julius Caesar et al? The natural world seems to play by, albeit at times somewhat complex, but generally fathomable rules; human based activities less so. If history really does repeat itself then we should probably pay attention.

Next time you meet an historian give them a sympathetic hug, they need and deserve it.
