I frequently delve into the
history of science but what about the science of history? If the thought processes
of current world leaders occasionally appear unclear, then how do we correctly
interpret the thinking and actions of Charlemagne, Theodoric, Julius Caesar et
al? The natural world seems to play by, albeit at times somewhat complex, but
generally fathomable rules; human based activities less so. If history really
does repeat itself then we should probably pay attention.
Next time you meet an historian give them a sympathetic hug, they need and
deserve it.
